Map for Birch Copse and Bedwyn Brail, starting in Great Bedwyn

Directions

  1. From Great Bedwyn wharf (Grid Ref SU 280 644), cross the road and continue along Frog Lane, passing the village hall on the right. Take the bridleway on the right (signed to Jockey Green). As you reach Jockey Green, continue straight on through the trees (crossing driveways) and, just when you see the road in front of you, turn left onto a bridleway.

  2. Walk up the track and, keeping a private entrance to the left, fork right. (A ruined kiln can be seen in the grounds of the cottage on the left.) Follow the track for 800 metres (half a mile) to a junction of paths. As a road comes into view ahead, turn right onto a grass bridleway and walk with woodland on the left. Just before a metal gate ahead, turn left into woodland then, after about 13 metres, go through a gate and turn right.

  3. Continue to a field (occasionally fenced) with woodland on the left. Follow the field edge through the valley for about 130 metres then, at a corner of the woodland on the left, go ahead across the field following the direction on the waymarker to another waymarker where the buildings of a large house (Folly Farm) will be seen ahead. Cross the field to Folly Farm entrance and turn right onto driveway.

  4. At the road, cross over and take the road signed to Oxenwood. After a few metres, take the footpath on the right and continue into woodland. Enter a field, keeping the woodland on the left. Ignore the first track on the left and take the next one straight on into woodland.

  5. At the T-junction, turn left signposted 'Windmill Footpath’. Go right at the next signpost, signed ‘Great Bedwyn Bridleway' and follow the winding path through the wood. At a field, keep to the left hand side. The village of Great Bedwyn comes into view. Continue with the hedge on the left to the bottom of the hill, turn right and go through the wooden gate onto the towpath. Turn right again and follow the towpath back to the start.
