Map for the St Katharine's walk starting in Great Bedwyn

Directions

  1. From the village square (Grid Ref SU 278 645) head north-east along Farm Lane. Turn left into Castle Road. At the T-junction with Brown's Lane cross the road and take the bridleway uphill towards a mast. Continue straight through the wood. After 180m (200 yds), take the grass bridleway which goes straight on as the track bears left and continue until it rejoins the track. Turn right. (If bridleway is impassable, stay on track taking a right turn at the junction and continue straight on when bridleway re-joins track.)

  2. After 90m (100 yds), fork left then ignore the left track immediately after and follow the signed bridleway straight on along a grass track. Go past the cottage on the left and continue to the gate ahead. (Note that the cottage and farm entrance are not a right-of-way.) Go through the gate.

  3. Cross the field diagonally right, towards a wooden hide on stilts. At the hide, head diagonally left towards a stile located in the hedgerow 45m (50 yds) to the left of a metal field gate. Cross the stile onto a lane. Turn left. Pass Chisbury Lane Farm on the right. At the road junction turn left. After the third cottage on the left, turn right at the signed footpath and follow the path around to the left through Bedwyn Common.

  4. Follow the signs through Bedwyn Common to a road; cross with care. Continue through the wood. At a junction with a wide track, head diagonally across, slightly to the left, to find a signed woodland path. Stay on this path until you reach a metalled track. Turn left. (The church is a short distance to the right.)

  5. Continue, passing a turning on the left to cottages and, at the next group of cottages, turn right. After 90m (100 yds), fork left by a ‘bus-stop’ sign and continue straight past a track on the right * to the wooden panel fence.

  6. At the fence turn left. Go through a kissing gate, turn right and follow the field edge (field to the left). Go through a pedestrian gate and a kissing gate, and go down the hill to a housing estate. At the road, turn left and left again at the road to reach the village centre.

* For a longer route (extra half mile), or to avoid livestock which sometimes use this field, turn right here and continue along the track taking the signed bridleway entrance by the cottage at the bottom. Continue along this tree-lined track and until you reach a road. Turning left takes you back into the village; or go straight on to reach the canal and return along the towpath.
