Holloway, Crofton, Haw Wood

From the centre of the village our walk set off in fine sunny weather, past the church, carefully across the pedestrian railway crossing and over the canal to the towpath where we set off in the direction of Crofton. After a short walk along the towpath, we left it to take the path to the Holloway, an ancient pathway through woodland.
We then continued through fields to the roman road. The cattle were separated from the path by an electric fence and they weren’t bothered by seeing the group. Three of them continued to bask in the sunshine on top of a chalky mound idly posing for our photographers!
From the height of the Roman road there’s a distant view of Wilton windmill, now bearing its new replacement sails. In the other direction, down across the valley, is Crofton Beam Engines. From here the route goes steeply downhill following the Roman road to cross the canal and railway again at Crofton and returns to Bedwyn close by Haw Wood.
On this walk our group of 11 walkers included a few members who had not walked with us in a while so we were pleased to welcome them back.
After the walk some of us popped into the Thursday café club at the church for soup and cake prepared and served to the community by volunteers.
No stiles. One fairly steep descent. Extreme care needed on the pedestrian rail crossings.
