Group walk: Heron’s Point, Chisbury Chapel, Monk’s Lane

This circular Chisbury route has recently been made more accessible by the replacement of seven stiles with gates on the section between Chisbury village centre and Heron’s Point wood. These were installed in March by Bedwyn Footpaths Group volunteers with support of the countryside access officer, and were funded by a grant from the Access for All scheme awarded by North Wessex Downs. The path through the wood has also recently been cleared of brambles to a good width by the local Forestry Commission ranger.
At Chisbury our group of 7 group walkers made a brief visit to the little thatched chapel, now a disused barn and under the care of English Heritage. There is a fantastic view across the valley from the chapel
Then our route continued along quiet country lanes, sunken wooded paths and tracks before crossing and turning back at the A4 main road to return through fields along Monk’s Lane, an ancient pathway.
This circular route could be joined at Chisbury by taking the path beside the old red telephone box in the centre of Chisbury and heading north-west. However roadside parking in Chisbury is limited and agricultural vehicles frequently pass so walkers need to park considerately. The route could also be joined by walking up from Little Bedwyn or could be walked as an extension of our published Walk No 5 from Great Bedwyn.
Two stiles, long steady hills, no steep ascents.
Our group were kindly given permission by the owners to park at Horsehall Hill Farm to start our walk from there. Please note that London Ride is a private driveway.
