Time: 10.00 am – 12.00 pm

Location: The Chains, opposite The Londis, High St, Gt Bedwyn. SN8 3NU.

After a short distance along the towpath this route heads uphill along a sunken ancient tree-lined path before it emerges into fields. After walking around field edges and across fields it leads through accessible kissing gates to the Roman road.

It’s a short walk along the chalky surface of the Roman road before the route returns home through Wilton Brail on a track between tall mature trees. There’s a map and instructions on the self-guided walk pages. Walk leaflet No 1: https://www.bedwynfootpathsgroup.org.uk/holloway

In November our 12 group walkers took a slightly shortened version of this published route. We started from the village centre and at Wilton took a permissive route along the field edge rather than crossing the fields as far as the Roman road. After the heavy rain of recent days we enjoyed a beautiful sunny morning walk.

We were pleased to welcome a couple of Ramblers from Wootton Bassett who joined our cheery group for this walk and afterwards at the Thursday Friendship Café for a soup and cake lunch.

No stiles. Towpath eroded to a narrow width in places. Steady long uphill climb beside Wilton Brail. Cattle may be grazing the fields at Wilton near the Roman road.
