Updated: 3 days ago

Thursday 15th May, 3.75 miles

Crofton beam engine tower and building

Date: : Thursday 15th May

Time: 10.00 am – 12.00 pm

Location: Bedwyn Wharf, Brook St, SN8 3PB

Our route through the popular Brail woods was a good walk with which to mark May’s National Walking Month. Twelve walkers assembled at the wharf on a warm sunny morning. We were especially pleased to welcome 3 new people, walking with us for the first time, and one, as Ramblers member, from as far afield as Royal Wootton Bassett!

After crossing the fields and weaving our way through the old cars at the garage at Brail Farm, we entered the woods above Brail Farm, to arrive at the path junction in Castle Copse. Our route then followed the main path to the southern end of the woods, from where we doubled back along the byway and crossed over the Wilton road to walk a section of Wilton Brail.

The bluebells are flowering early this year because of the warm dry spring so they were past their best but there were still some flowering vigorously alongside the track in Wilton Brail

We enjoyed a couple of rests on the benches. The first in Bedwyn Brail to take in the distant view across to Tottenham House and the Column in Savernake Forest. We also took advantage of the view from the second bench at the top of the climb uphill into Wilton Brail.

No stiles, a couple of moderate ascents, the steepest is into Wilton Brail. We recommend keeping dogs on leads. Sheep, lambs & ground nesting birds all present. Ticks active in the area. Advice here on how to protect yourself:
