Bedwyn Circular 4 miles

Date: : Sunday 19th January
Time: 10.00 am – 12.00 pm
Location: The Chains, Great Bedwyn (the island opposite The Londis, High St, Great Bedwyn SN8 3NU)
Bedwyn Footpaths Group formed in January 2015 so we chose the Bedwyn Circular route for our 10th anniversary walk. This route is walk No 2 of our published self-guided walks. You can find a copy of it on our website here . The walk follows paths around the outskirts of Bedwyn to complete a circuit of 4 miles .
A large group of 23 keen walkers assembled in the village centre for the start of our group walk. We left the village along Farm Lane to cross the railway, river and canal to Galley Lane where we encountered the first of many muddy challenges. Then from Jockey Green our route skirted the Brail before heading to Coster Hill where we took a break to demolish the last of the Christmas mince pies. The weather was dry but chilly and overcast so the view from the hill was clouded. We crossed the water meadow to join Hatchet Lane. This lane had recently flooded, as it often does in heavy rain, so it was still wet but passable.
Our boots had already picked up a lot of mud before we came to the worst section, the path from Shawgrove to Forest Hill, and a few walkers decided to take a shorter route home. The advantage of this route is that it never strays far from the village and there are many places where anyone wanting to return to the village can join or leave the route.
The rest of us continued to the aerial at Chisbury and then headed down to the Three Tuns for a celebratory drink.
No stiles, expect mud in wet conditions.
