Thursday 15th January 2026. 2.5 miles

Crofton beam engine tower and building

Date: Thursday 15th January 2026

Time: 10:00 am – 11:45 am

Location: St Katharine’s Church, Savernake

This walk route follows footpaths and tracks around the common through tall oaks and conifers. If walking this route in June keep an eye out for the foxgloves appearing through the undergrowth on the section to the NE of the Bedwyn Road.

Despite the heavy rain forecast for our January walk there was only a little drizzle and 14 walkers assembled at the church prepared for the soggy conditions. Our group was lucky to be offered the shelter of the church where we could enjoy hot drinks and refreshments after the walk.

St Katharine’s is a lovely little church and well worth a visit. Restored and reopened in 1952 after suffering accidental bomb damage towards the end of the second world war from an ammunition explosion nearby. https://savernakeforestchurch.wordpress.com/home/history/

The route crosses a field near Warren Farm which may have cattle grazing there. They can be avoided by following the road instead.

No stiles No steep hills. 2 road crossings and two short sections of road walking.
