Crofton beam engine tower and building

Date: : Sunday 13th April

Time: 10.00 am – 12.30 pm

Location: Bedwyn village hall, Frog Lane, SN8 3PB

A 5 year old and dog joined 13 walkers at the village hall for this leisurely spring walk which began along Galley Lane to Jockey Green. There we saw our first field of sheep with their lambs, and we were to see many more on this walk. Our route took us uphill on the bridleway past Mirldown House, with a view of the remains of an early19th century tile kiln in the grounds there – now a protected ruin under the care of Historic England. It’s a reminder of the industrial history of this area. At the top of the hill we passed our second field of young lambs and their mums.

The walk through Burridge Heath is on a metal driveway and at the road junction, instead of walking directly to Little Bedwyn, we turned right down the hill along the lane to join a footpath on the left through a kissing gate that leads through fields. There are good views as the route drops back down to Little Bedwyn and we walked through two fields of shy lambs.

Our route home to Bedwyn and the hall was along Kelston Rd and the bridleway, but walking the towpath could be an option too because these two paths run parallel. After the unusually warm dry weather of the previous few weeks the paths were bone dry and the threatened showers on the day never materialised, so we all returned home dry too.

No stiles, a couple of steady ascents.
