Group Walk: Savernake Oaks.

Updated: 1 day ago

Sunday 17th August 2025, 4.75 miles

Crofton beam engine tower and building

Date: : Sunday 17th August

Time: 10.00 am – 12.30 pm

Location: Postern Hill Car Park, Savernake.  SN8 4ND

This was a lovely cool shady walk for the 16 walkers who came along to visit some of Savernake’s 32 named oaks on a sunny Sunday. The Cathedral Oak and the Big Belly Oak are the two oldest, at over 1,000 years old. There are 7 others to watch out for along this route; Bumble Oak, Old Paunchy, Marie Louise, Seymour, Spiral, Saddle and the White Road Oak.

This route is partly on good tracks but with some sections of narrow winding paths. There are no marked trails in Savernake. It is recommended that walkers take a map or use a navigation aid to negotiate the many paths.

One stile (It only needs to be climbed to get up close to the Big Belly Tree). There could be cattle in the forest enclosures. Note that the Big Belly Oak is immediately adjacent to a busy main road with fast traffic passing close.

A similar but longer version of this walk with a guide to the location of the trees is available to download from https://www.marlborough-tc.gov.uk/visitors/walks-sports-recreation

There is a leaflet with a map of Savernake available from the White Horse Book shop in Marlborough.
