Group Walk: Sun 22nd June 2025 Bedwyn Brail and Webb’s Gully

Updated: Jun 27

Sunday 22nd June, 3.75 miles

Crofton beam engine tower and building

Date: : Sunday, 22nd June

Time: 10.00 am – 12.00 pm

Location: Bedwyn Wharf, Brook St, SN8 3PB

Eight of the group met at the wharf on a warm sunny morning and headed up towards the Brail on the recently cleared path. The grass in the field had been left to grow, but a couple of swathes had been mown which afforded us easy access to the brail footpath.  We proceeded through the woodland on the northern edge of Bedwyn Brail, before turning left into a beautiful meadow containing orchids and many butterflies.

After crossing the road to Folly Farm, we walked up through the trees of Webb’s Gully, stopping to look at the improvements which have been made to the path where it crosses what would normally be a stream at the bottom of the gully. However, after several weeks of hot, sunny weather and very little rain, the ground was completely dry.

We continued up through woodland and along the edge of a field of maize before returning downhill by Mirldown and the ruined kiln. The final stretch of the walk took us along Galley Lane from Jockey Green to the cricket field and back to the wharf.

Thanks to Peter Angus who stepped in at short notice to lead this walk.

No stiles, a moderate ascent through the gully.
