Group Walk Pewsey, Scotchel and Jones’s Mill reserves and canal 4 miles.
Date: Thursday 13th June 2024
Time: 10.00am - 12.00pm
Location: Bouverie Hall free car park, Pewsey SN9 5EQ
A large group of 18 walkers assembled in Pewsey for this walk organised by members Kevin & Ros McGowan. It was lovely to welcome friends old and new, some who hadn’t walked with us for a while and others new to the group.
We left the village walking beside the Salisbury Avon, along a winding path through the Scotchel, a peaceful area bequeathed to the village by a resident Miss Middlemass and managed by Pewsey Parish Council as a nature reserve. It is close to the village centre (handily near to Marshall’s bakery, famous for the traditional Wiltshire lardy cake!) We walked on to another reserve, Jones’s Mill which was also bequeathed by a resident, Vera Jeans, and is now in the care of the Wiltshire Wildlife Trust. There is a long winding boardwalk through the fenland beside the river and both common and marsh orchids were seen in flower. The first were flowering amongst buttercups and the second surrounded by yellow flags. A beautiful colour combination.
Following the recce earlier in the week the route was altered to return by Dursden Lane, Kepnal and King’s corner rather than the towpath because of a flooded gateway in the field so on leaving the boardwalk our route turned right (SE) , instead of left (NW) to the towpath as shown on the attached map.
A few things to note: the long boardwalk is narrow, only two planks wide with water on either side. Livestock might be grazing the meadow. No stiles. A short flight of steps. The map shows the original planned route.
